The story behind Ecorithms
Our mission is to power the shift toward zero waste by turning everyday waste data into meaningful action.
Ecorithms, based in San Diego, provides advanced AI-powered waste compliance software that helps haulers, municipalities, and sustainability teams reduce waste contamination, support zero waste goals, and comply with local recycling regulations across the U.S.
Our flagship solution, WasteAID, uses computer vision to automatically detect contaminated waste, perform route-level audits, and identify non-compliant behavior during collection—without the need for hardware installation. The system tracks organics, recycling, and landfill streams, helping teams enforce proper sorting and reduce contamination at the curb.
Built to support California’s SB 1383 and similar municipal waste ordinances, WasteAID integrates with fleet systems and CRMs to recover missed contamination charges, avoid fines, and streamline compliance tracking for every account.
WasteAID also includes a full educational outreach engine—automated postcards, email alerts, and contamination heatmaps—to promote customer behavior change and increase recycling participation over time.
For organizations working toward zero waste, WasteAID turns compliance challenges into data-driven solutions, making it easier to meet local mandates, secure more contracts, and operate more efficient, cleaner waste systems.

How Ecorithms Inc. started
How Ecorithms Inc. started
How Ecorithms Inc. started
In 2020, a group of computer science students at the University of San Diego started a challenging senior class project. They sought to develop a software solution that would allow waste haulers to analyze recordings from DVR systems installed on trash and recycling trucks to detect bin pickups.
After completing the senior design project, the group decided to partner with the project sponsors and take their ideas to the next level and launch their own company Ecorithms Inc. Today, they continue to innovate in the waste industry with WasteAID and are well-positioned to make a lasting impact.
